Enterprise Outsourcing sponsors
annual code challenge

25 November 2020
Application Development continues to be a fast-growing, in-demand technology that is rapidly changing the way organizations do business. Pearson Institute Bedfordview gave their IT students the opportunity to take part in an annual Code Challenge whereby students are given specific criteria and a timeline in which to develop an application. Enterprise Outsourcing, Pearson Institute’s industry partner, and global IT leader had the honour of sponsoring this year’s challenge.
On the 5th November 2020 Enterprise Outsourcing had the privilege of taking part in the final judging of the Code Challenge. Five teams consisting of one to two students successfully worked their way to the finals where a virtual competition was held that morning. The brief for the challenge entailed the students to develop and design a fully functional college registration application. The application developed had to be either a desktop, mobile, website or hybrid application.
Amongst many requirements the judging criteria consisted of marketability, which focuses on the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and Human Computer Interaction (HCI), mainly the look and feel, as well as the functionality of the application. The application needed to work well, have excellent structure, user-friendly navigation and organized input and output displays. The students at Pearson Institute Bedfordview set the bar high for future events with this challenge. The quality of work produced by the finalists was both impressive and innovative, this was clear in both the development and in their way of thinking.
Enterprise Outsourcing continues to grow their long-standing partnership with Pearson Institute, “There is huge value in sponsoring events such as these, not only are we able to see the standard of work and knowledge being developed and learnt within the institute, but we are also able to gain direct insight into the potential these students have for the working world,” said Schalk van der Merwe, COO at Enterprise Outsourcing. The competition and final judging ended after an exciting morning of online presentations, prototype displays, videos and interactive discussions. Fellow students were able to log in and watch the live judging session to see the live demo’s, support their friends and listen to important keynotes and comments given by the judges and lecturers.
In particular, one student and his work stood out, grabbing the judges’ attention immediately. “The work produced was close to flawless, our representative was left speechless with the attention to detail, high quality of work and genuine understanding of the experience a user should have when using any application,” said Schalk van der Merwe. Tristan Burdett was announced successful as he took first prize, winning the Code Challenge. He stunned the judges with his brilliant mind, clean work and excellent presentation. Enterprise Outsourcing had the privilege of presenting Tristan with his prize at their Sandton premises on 19 November 2020. Tristan was presented with his cheque and prize, had the opportunity to sit with one of our Development Team Leaders Kyle Hulley, Marketing Executive Tayla Verreyne and one of Enterprise Outsourcing’s Directors Judith Phologane.
The morning was well-spent with short introductions to each department, giving Tristan the opportunity to ask questions and gain a better understanding of Enterprise Outsourcing and the solutions they provide, a tour around their offices and an opportunity to apply for a development position within the organization. Enterprise Outsourcing thoroughly enjoyed this experience and look forward to future endeavors with Pearson Institute. As a global IT leader, they are excited to see what the future may hold, upcoming events and challenges are limitless after seeing the high quality of work that has been produced by these vibrant and hard-working students.
